USU Recognition Request Submitted – What to Expect

Last week, we submitted our official request for recognition of the Student & Instructional Services bargaining unit. Regents’ policy requires management to recognize USU as long as our bargaining unit is “reasonable,” so University HR is now considering that question. While we can’t predict exactly what attitude they’ll take, we’re ready for any possibility.

Here are the most likely scenarios, given the experience of other unions recently formed at UM:

  • If HR agrees that our unit is reasonable, then we’ll arrange a date for our cards to be counted, and our recognition will move ahead quickly.
  • If HR agrees with the broad conception of our bargaining unit, but has questions about certain job titles or the classifications of certain people, then we may be in a position to negotiate. If we consider changes, we’ll be in touch with any members who would be affected. We might need information from you about your job on short notice, or for you to participate in a decision, so be ready!
  • If HR objects to the whole idea of a Student & Instructional Services unit, we have the right to appeal that decision to an independent arbitrator. Since we’ve been prepared for this possibility from the beginning, we’ll have a strong case and the assistance of AFT Michigan’s lawyer.

Meanwhile, we’re moving forward to establish our constitution, including setting our dues rate. Look for informational meetings to be scheduled soon, and if you haven’t already, sign your card to be eligible to vote.

It’s Safe to Sign!

Did you know that signing your union card is confidential? Your name and signature will be stored in a database only the union organizers can access. When we file for recognition, a neutral third party will verify employees’ signed cards; University management does not receive the list.

Once we have won our first contract and begun receiving all the benefits we’ve earned, University payroll will see that you are a member – this is when dues will begin to be withdrawn. Of course, we’ll only reach this point once a majority of staff in our group sign up, so you’ll be in good company.

Staff Voices

"I joined USU because even though I'm a small part of U-M, I don't need to feel small or powerless. USU is an opportunity to join my voice with thousands of others to advocate for ourselves and our ability to support colleagues and students. Whether it's through improving pay, increasing job stability, or gaining respect in the workplace, USU gives me the chance to be part of building a better U-M. -Katie Prichard, Associate Registrar, U-M Museum of Art" "I strongly believe that every worker, no matter their role or organization, deserves the right to fair representation and protection against unfair treatment in the workplace. I love my job and my team, but I know that's not the case for every staff member across the university. I joined USU to help change that and ensure what we love about our jobs is protected. -Madi Atkins, Senior Performance Support Analyst, ITS"
